Motorcycle insurance

Motorcycle insurance in Orlando

Florida’s motorcycle rules are different from car rules. We’ll explain what’s required, what’s worth having, and compare carriers for your bike.

The short answer

Florida doesn’t require personal injury protection for motorcycles, and PIP from a car policy won’t cover you on a bike. Riders over 21 may ride without a helmet only if they carry at least $10,000 in medical benefits coverage. Liability, uninsured motorist, collision and comprehensive coverage protect you and your bike, and liability can be required after a crash or certain violations.

Coverage worth considering

  • Bodily injury and property damage liability for injuries and damage you cause to others.
  • Uninsured motorist for your injuries when an uninsured driver hits you. For riders, this is one of the most important coverages to carry.
  • Medical payments to help with your own medical bills.
  • Collision and comprehensive to repair or replace your bike after a crash, theft or storm.
  • Accessories and gear coverage for custom parts, helmets and riding gear.

Many carriers discount for safety courses, bundling with auto and riding experience.

No. Your auto policy and its PIP don’t cover you while riding. You need a separate motorcycle policy.
