The short answer
Florida requires every registered car to carry at least $10,000 in personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 in property damage liability. Bodily injury liability isn’t required for most drivers, but without it you could be personally responsible if you injure someone in a crash. Most drivers we work with also carry bodily injury liability, uninsured motorist coverage, and collision and comprehensive on newer cars.
Florida is a no-fault state. After a crash, your own PIP coverage pays 80% of your medical bills and 60% of lost income, up to $10,000, no matter who caused the accident. You need to get medical treatment within 14 days of the crash to use PIP benefits.
| Coverage | Florida minimum | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Personal injury protection (PIP) | $10,000 | Your own medical bills and lost wages |
| Property damage liability | $10,000 | Damage you cause to someone else’s car or property |
| Bodily injury liability | Not required for most drivers | Injuries you cause to other people |
Some drivers do have to carry bodily injury liability. A DUI conviction brings an FR-44 filing with much higher limits, and certain other violations require an SR-22.
Carriers price Orlando drivers on their driving record, the car they drive, how far they drive, their ZIP code, their coverage choices and, where carriers use it, their insurance score. Because each carrier weighs those things differently, the same driver can get very different prices. That’s the main reason comparing several companies is worth the few minutes it takes.
Many carriers discount both policies when your home and car are insured together. Sometimes splitting them between two carriers still comes out ahead. We’ll price it both ways and show you.
Have your driver’s license, your vehicle’s VIN or year and model, and your current policy handy.

Yes. Your own personal injury protection pays a share of your medical bills and lost wages after a crash, up to your PIP limit, regardless of who was at fault. Damage to cars and serious injuries can still lead to claims against the at-fault driver.
Most drivers aren’t legally required to carry it, but it’s the coverage that protects you if you hurt someone. Without it, an injured driver can come after your personal assets. Drivers with an FR-44 or SR-22 requirement must carry it.
An FR-44 is a certificate your insurance company files with the state after a DUI conviction. It proves you carry higher liability limits than a normal policy. Our FR-44 and SR-22 page explains the requirements.
Compare several carriers, bundle with your home or renters policy, ask about safe driver and multi-car discounts, and choose deductibles you could comfortably pay. A clean record helps most over time. We’ll review your options at every renewal.
Send us your current policy and we’ll compare it against several carriers. If what you have is already the best deal, we’ll tell you that too.
